Local Spotlight: Old Town Farmstand
One of my favorite things about living in Three Forks is discovering the people and small businesses that are finding creative ways to make our community even better. Old Town Farmstand is one of those places.
Owned by Mike and Roxanne Mulder, Old Town Farmstand sits at 275 Old Town Road on the historic Dunbar property, just outside of Three Forks. The property itself has deep roots in our area's history. The Dunbar family established the property in the 1860s, and the home that now houses the farm shop and bakery was built in 1908 on the original Three Forks townsite. Mike and Roxanne purchased the property in 2023 and have been breathing new life into it ever since.
And they've created something pretty special.
More Than a Farmstand
When I recently stopped by for a tour, Mike and Roxanne walked me through the shop, and what immediately stood out was just how much they offer.
Their goal is to provide many of the everyday basics our community needs while sourcing and producing as much as possible locally. You'll find farm-raised poultry, beef, eggs, seasonal produce, cheeses, frozen proteins, pizzas, baked goods, sweets and plenty of other goodies throughout the shop. Their Farm Box program takes that idea even further, bringing together produce, meat, eggs, breads, pastries, honey and products from several area farms and producers.
They also provide space for other small businesses and makers. During our tour, we saw products from local artists and locally made personal-care items, and many of the products Mike showed us were produced within about 20 miles of the farm.
That's one of my favorite things about what they're doing. Supporting Old Town Farmstand often means you're supporting several local producers at the same time.
We Need to Talk About Roxanne's Sourdough
If you've been there, you probably already know.
Roxanne's sourdough has become one of the things Old Town Farmstand is known for. Their baking focuses on locally sourced ingredients when possible, and the farm has built quite the following for its breads, pastries and other baked goods. Their offerings go well beyond a traditional loaf, too, with products like focaccia, rolls, cookies and rotating seasonal treats appearing in their Farm Boxes and shop.
And then there are the pizzas.
Mike told me they're one of their most popular items, so consider this your warning not to walk into Old Town Farmstand hungry!
Fresh Food, Close to Home
Their fresh-food selection is another part of the shop worth checking out.
Old Town Farmstand raises its own pasture-raised poultry and eggs and sources additional products from farms throughout our area. Their current Farm Box partners include producers offering Gallatin Valley beef, Ruby Valley honey, local greens, produce, potatoes and microgreens.
Their customizable Farm Box program is also a really cool option for anyone wanting to incorporate more locally produced food into everyday life. Instead of receiving the same predetermined CSA box every time, members can select a box size and customize what goes into it. Farm pickup is available, along with delivery options and select farmers-market pickup locations.
It's essentially a way to shop from several local farms at once without having to track everything down individually.
And Now... Azure Products!
Another addition I'm really excited about is that Old Town Farmstand has started carrying Azure products.
For a small community like Three Forks, having access to additional pantry staples and specialty products right here locally is such a cool opportunity. Combined with the food grown, raised and produced at the farm and by other Montana producers, it gives our community another option for keeping more of our shopping close to home.
Be sure to check with the Farmstand for their current Azure selection, as available products may change.
Classes, Events & Getting the Community Together
Food is only part of what Mike and Roxanne are building.
Old Town Farmstand has intentionally created a place where people can gather, learn and connect.
Throughout the year they host classes at the farm taught by local instructors. Current and upcoming offerings have included salsa making with MSU Extension, a jams and jellies class, a sauerkraut fermentation class, Paint 'n' Pizza, and vendor fairs featuring games, pizza and activities. Classes requiring registration can be reserved through the Farmstand.
They've also hosted farm-centered community events with local vendors, food, music and activities, and their Summer Sundays have included a farmers market and farm activities.
For the younger crowd, Old Town Farmstand has even offered Farm Camp, giving kids an opportunity to spend time on the farm and participate in hands-on activities.
There's a really neat full-circle element to all of this. The Dunbar property was once known as a gathering place during the early history of Three Forks. More than a century later, Mike and Roxanne are once again creating a place where our community can gather.
Why Places Like This Matter
This is exactly why I love highlighting local businesses.
Old Town Farmstand isn't simply selling eggs and sourdough. Mike and Roxanne are creating another way for us to know where our food comes from, support our neighbors, discover other Montana producers, learn something new and spend time together as a community.
And they've managed to do all of that while preserving and giving new purpose to a piece of Three Forks history.
If you haven't been out to Old Town Farmstand yet, add it to your list. Grab some bread, check out what's in the freezer and produce case, browse the local goods, see what classes are coming up...and definitely don't skip the pizza.
